The band's lineup—consisting of lead vocalist Till Lindemannlead guitarist Richard Krusperhythm guitarist Paul Landersbassist Oliver Riedeldrummer Christoph Schneiderand keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz —has remained unchanged throughout their history.
Their approach to songwriting has also remained unchanged, with Lindemann writing and singing the lyrics over instrumental pieces that the rest of the band have completed beforehand. Prior to their formation, some members were associated with the punk rock acts Feeling B and First Arsch.

At that time, he was heavily influenced by American music, especially that of rock group Kiss. After the Berlin Wall came down, he moved back home to Schwerinwhere Till Lindemann worked as a basket-weaver and played drums in the band First Arsch loosely translated as "First Arse" or "First Ass". He realized that he did not want to make American music and concentrated on creating a unique German sound. Kruspe, Riedel and Schneider started working together on a new project in Finding it difficult to write both music and lyrics, Kruspe persuaded Lindemann, whom he had overheard singing while he was working, to join the fledgling group.
The band called themselves Rammstein-Flugschau Rammstein Airshow after the Ramstein air show disaster. Guitarist Paul Landers said the spelling of Ramstein with the extra "m" was a mistake. A contest was held in Berlin for amateur bands inthe winner of which would receive access to a professional recording studio for a whole week.
Kruspe, Riedel, Schneider, and Lindemann entered and won the contest with a 4-track demo tape with demo versions of songs from Herzeleid, written in English. This sparked Landers' attention, who wanted in on the project upon hearing their demo.
Though initially hesitant, Lorenz eventually agreed to join the band.

Rammstein to me will always be the poor man's Laibach. Their sound and imagery always looks and sounds to me to be just a more diluted and acceptable obviously marketed at the USA type rock. Even looking at videos of their fans they seem to attract fans of Teutonic possibly fascistic rock. Even if the band don't want that image that seems to be the average American fan base.
Musically they are ok if a light more pop orientated hard rock. Think of them as a Twisted Sister for the 2k era. Best listened to with videos imho to get the full impact. Why they and more bands do not release video lps only is beyond me as the image is what they are selling before and above the music.

Nothing unusual there, except for the fact that the future Rammstein keyboard player and his bandmates were natives of East Berlin — a city that had been physically, politically and ideologically separated from its western twin for decades.
Did they have to jump the Wall? Someone informed him that the Wall had fallen that very night, smashed by protesters nearly 30 years after it had been erected. It was a momentous occasion, albeit one that prevented Feeling B from getting home. We had to stay the night in West Berlin. On a global scale, the fall of the Berlin Wall was the most momentous event since the end of the Second World War. It sparked off the reunification of Germany and set in motion a chain of events that would end in the dismantling of the USSR and the end of the Cold War.
But for Flake and Feeling B, it had a more detrimental effect. Everything was possible now, where it had been forbidden in the past.
And so everybody tried to make new things. Flake would become one of those people. Their name was Rammstein, and they would go on to become the biggest, boldest and most controversial German band of the last 25 years.
Like Flake, Rammstein guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe grew up in what was East Germany. He had moved from his hometown of Schwerin to East Berlin in his late teens. Both men agree that there was a thriving underground music scene in the capital. The authoritarian East German government forced bands to apply for a licence to make music, a process that involved playing in front of a commission of eight or 10 suited people.
An arty, livewire band like Feeling B could fudge the audition by changing their lyrics and toning down some of their more energetic songs. Few acts were turned down. If we needed a guitar player, we took them from another band.
I loved that idea. So much excitement, so much music going on. All that changed drastically after the Wall came down. The structure of the East German music industry collapsed completely. The eastern bands whose music had helped bring about the collapse of the system were now forced to reposition and reinvent themselves in order to gain a foothold in this new, thoroughly commercialised music business.
Feeling B managed to get with the programme. And soon, this half-serious side-project would overshadow everything else.
Feeling B would often ask if anyone in the audience could put them up for the night. One night, Till was in the crowd. When the shout out for five beds or even a floor came, he offered them space at his house.
Till was a former swimming prodigy turned musician. He was soon invited along to the extra-curricular jam sessions that would eventually sow the seeds for Rammstein. It was like a therapy group. One of the first songs this un-named collective wrote was named after the town of Ramstein, scene of a airshow disaster in which 70 people died after two planes collided in mid-air.
Ram-stone: a name that suited their sound perfectly. Sometimes they would play on the same bill as Feeling B, taking the money they earned from the latter and investing it back into their new project. Flake finds it difficult to pinpoint exactly when Rammstein became their main focus.Celebrating the band's 25th anniversary, this precision attack is both a satisfying return to classic sounds and a fresh vision of the band that remains triumphant and, most shockingly, even elegant and graceful.
Kruspe and Paul Landers provides a fresh batch of addictive, headbanging riffs. Beneath the frontal assault, Rammstein remains groove-heavy and melodic, owing to both bassist Oliver Riedel and the band's ever-patient whipping boy, keyboardist Flake.
Here, Flake in particular has more moments to shine brighter than he has in years. While the Herzeleid synths on the Kraftwerk -indebted "Radio" inspire appropriate nostalgia, the cheesy Euro-techno stabs on "Auslander" complement the equally unsavory subjects of the song itself.
His finest work on RAMMSTEIN is the synth-washed centerpiece "Weit Weg," a soaring epic that conveys longing and loneliness through the lens of a voyeur, while elevating the lecherous subject matter with frontman Till Lindemann 's poetic celestial imagery.
It's not just an album standout, but a catalog highlight. In addition to the band's tightened execution, Lindemann has also advanced in terms of vocal delivery and lyricism. While Rammstein has always been more insightful and socio-politically minded than they're given credit for, mainstream controversy frequently distracts from their oft-misunderstood messages, which tend to condemn societal ills, not glorify them.
This set is no different, as Lindemann delves deeper into the darkness by exploring topics such as fraught nationalism "Deutschland"religion "Zeig Dich"and the sex trade "Auslander," "Puppe". From the perspective of a young child, the father of two daughters examines the human toll of sex trafficking, the pain and rage of the lyrics exploding through his bloodied vocals on one of his most intense performances to date.
By illuminating such perversions and the sordid side of ourselves and society, Rammstein 's maturity and wisdom continue to evolve, even when they reliably dip back into the playful and satirical, like on odes to the less complicated delights of life "Radio," "Sex," and "Tattoo"and love and loss "Was Ich Liebe," "Diamant".
Injecting their trademark sound with fresh flair, RAMMSTEIN is one of the band's best efforts, a potent distillation of all the elements that have endeared them to fans for two-and-a-half decades. After all these years together, it's a wonder that Rammstein continue to improve while still retaining the hunger and passion that has helped them amass a devoted following across the globe.
